Character Age: Somewhere late 30’s to 40’s
Character Gender: Male
Original Canon

Background Link: http://www.zeldawiki.org/Linebeck#History
Personality: There’s a few sides to the illustrious Captain of the SS Linebeck. First, there’s the side that most people see. In the game, when Link asks around about the captain, people comment on how brave and heroic he is. Linebeck himself comments later to Link that he often clears two dungeons before breakfast! This all points to Linebeck being an adventurer. A real man of the sea who vanquishes monsters, pirates, and rivals alike, and makes off with the treasure and saves the day. But this is just a facade, and a well constructed one. The humorous fact is that Linebeck is a coward, who just happens to tell good stories.

This cowardly side is the one shown through most of the game. Linebeck rarely, if ever, comes out and SAYS he’s afraid. Of course he couldn’t! He has an image to uphold! So he lies. A lot. And somewhat badly, but he sticks to his guns. For example, he sends Link into the dangerous dungeons on the islands alone, claiming he needs to stay behind to guard the ship. During their first encounter, Linebeck is captured in a trap in the Temple of the Ocean King, claiming to have a sprained ankle. Once Link rescues him, however, he takes off at full speed out of the cursed dungeon. When Link’s fairy companion Ciela calls him out on it, he continues to bluff and feign injury, claiming that, surely, that fairy is just seeing things! It’s also pretty clear that Linebeck cares very little for actual adventure. Instead, he’s just interested in treasure. His greed and lust for shiny baubles are his driving force. The more treasure he can get his hands on, the better. In fact, many times, he shows more interest in treasure than in Link’s safety, but never more than his own safety. So the face that Linebeck shows the world is that of a seasoned adventurer, always looking for the next big score, ready to take on anything! The real Linebeck is far more cowardly, and while he IS looking for the next big score, he’s not willing to put his tail on the line for it. Now... other people’s tails is a different story.

However, as is customary for the goofy side character in games like these, Link’s true courage starts to affect Linebeck. And how could it not? Seeing the boy a fraction of his age defeat giant monsters and great evil, all for the sake of a friend, has to stress the old seafarer, perhaps even bring him back to a time when he was much more spirited himself. As the game progresses, Linebeck starts putting himself out there more, helping Link more and developing an almost parental bond with the boy. When the trio confront the great evil terrorizing the sea, Bellum, Link is injured and drops his sword. In his finest moment, Linebeck picks up the sword and attempts, rather feebly, to attack Bellum and save Link and Ciela. He does end up distracting the beast long enough for Link to recover, but in turn, he is possessed by the monster. Link saves him in return, and Linebeck is genuinely thankful. Then, when Linebeck is offered a wish by the Ocean King (who could grant him riches beyond his wildest imagination), Linebeck chooses instead to bring his most prized possession, the SS Linebeck, back from being sunk.

By endgame, where I am taking Linebeck from, he has grown a bit as a character. Is he still a blowhard, tall-tale-telling, drunken coward? Oh yes. But is there a spark of real courage, of compassion, deep down inside? Yes. And by apping him to Animus, I am hoping to cultivate that spirit and allow Linebeck to get over some more of his cowardice.
Abilities: ABSOLUTELY NONE.
